Built by the Romans in a fluvial valley, Muravera spreads itself over a territory inhabited since historic times, as evidenced by the megalithic vestiges found, perhaps due to its closeness to the sea.  The Pisans and the Aragonese definitely dominated the area.  Not to be forgotten are the numerous raids by pirates that caused the construction of watch and defensive towers spread along the coastline.
But this small village's recent success as a tourist destination is mainly due to its very long beach (about 8 km.) called Costa Rei and the nearby tourist resort, highly regarded especially by German tourists.
The entire area's citrus production is also quite important.  In March, a local harvest festival takes place characterised by food tasting and by a coloured parade of "traccas"; typical Sardinian carts.
