The IslandPlaces to seeThe Castello NeighbourhoodCagliari
One of the most beautiful quarters in Cagliari is definitely Castello, dating back to the Middle Ages and situated on the inside of a high boundary wall, on the upper side of the city, once political and civil centre of Cagliari.
Characterised by narrow alleys and old, elegant buildings but also by run-down houses, Castello deserves a visit to see its crafts, artistic studios, antique shops, cultural events especially during the summer and for its expositions and exhibitions.
The neighbourhood also has plenty of monuments such as churches, towers and buildings.  Entering through Porta Cristina, you'll start your visit back in the past with the Pisan tower of S. Pancrazio.  To the right of the tower, the Cittadella dei Musei are the premises of the National Museum and the Archaeological Museum.  Continuing further, you'll arrive at Piazza Palazzo in front of the Palazzo Viceregio, today the Prefecture's premises.  A bit further ahead, there's the Cathedral dedicated to St. Mary.  It has been dated back to the thirteenth-century, is in Neo-Romanesque style and conserves important works including paintings on canvas, statues, bas-reliefs and decorations dating back to different ages.  Carrying on, you'll wander through a labyrinth of narrow streets, small squares and wonderful views of the sea and of the whole town.  The tour ends with Bastione di St.Remy, a massive and high terrace, one of the most preferred places for walking at night in the summer and during the day in winter.
